Description
Ferrochromium is an iron alloy composed of chromium and iron. Based on carbon content, it is classified into high-carbon ferrochromium (C ≤ 10%, 4–8%), medium-carbon ferrochromium (C ≤ 4.0%, 0.5–4%), low-carbon ferrochromium (C ≤ 0.5%, 0.15–0.5%), and ultra-low-carbon ferrochromium (C ≤ 0.15%, 0.06%).
Commonly used alloys also include silicon-chromium alloy and chromium-iron nitride, among others.
It is primarily used as an alloying additive in steelmaking, added during the final refining stage. When smelting stainless steels and other low-carbon steel grades, low- or ultra-low-carbon ferrochromium must be employed.
